A
- Adjusted Position Movement (adjPMov): A version of Position Movement that adjusts the starting order by removing cars that DNF, so movement reflects on-track passes/strategy rather than places gained from attrition.
- At Stake: A finishing-position battle where the gap between two adjacent finishers is within a “competitive” threshold (e.g., 3 seconds), indicating a plausible on-track fight.
- At Stake %: The percentage of finishing positions that are “at stake” (i.e., adjacent finishers are within the competitive gap threshold) across a sample of races.
D
- DNF: Count of when a car fails to finish a race for any reason; it can be broken down into DNFc, DNFm and DNFo.
- DNFc: Count of when a car fails to finish due to contact or any other on-track incident.
- DNFm: Count of when a car fails to finish due to mechanical or other car-related issues (Electrical, Fire, etc).
- DNFo: Count of when a car fails to finish for reasons other than contact or mechanical failures.
E
- eq (Prefix): Track-Equalized metrics attempt to normalize all tracks to make metrics more comparable from track to track by normalizing all tracks to 100 laps with 1-minute average green flag lap times.
- eqLaps: Number of Laps Completed normalized to 100 laps per race. So if a car completes 100 out of 200 laps in the Indy 500 their eqLaps would be 50 for that race.
- eqLL: Laps Led normalized to 100 laps per race. eqLL of 100 would indicate the driver led every lap in a race.
F
fa (Prefix): Finisher-adjusted metrics adjusts the starting order by removing cars that DNF. These metrics are intended to remove the effects of attrition and simply capture the effect on-track passes/strategy.
- faPG: Finisher-adjusted Positions Gained.
- faPtsG: Finisher-adjusted Points Gained.
FP: Finishing Position.
G
- Gap: The time gap (in seconds) between a car and the car immediately ahead of it at the end of the race.
L
- Laps: Laps Comleted.
- LL: Laps Led.
M
- Margin of Victory (MoV): The time gap between P1 and P2 at the end of a race.
P
- PG: Positions Gained - The absolute difference between a car’s finishing position and starting position; a simple measure of how much a car improved over the course of a race.
- POD: Podium - A top-3 finish in a race.
- Points at Stake: For a given Position at Stake, the point value assigned to the higher finishing position in that battle (used to weight battles toward the front of the field).
- Points at Stake %: Total Points at Stake divided by total points available across the sample; a weighted measure of how much of the race’s “valuable” finishing order was contested.
- Position at Stake: See At Stake.
- PtsG: Points Gained - Points gained by a car moving up in the order from its starting position to its finishing position. Similar to PG but weighted to reflect the non-linear way in which championship points are awarded.
R
- R: Races Started.
S
- SP: Starting Posiiton.
T
- T10: A Top-10 finish in a race.
W
- W: Race Wins.
